Patsy Ostroy has been a family lawyer since 1977, acting in the roles of litigator, consultant, and mediator. In the past several years, she has decided to limit her practice to non-litigation services, including mediation, consultation, document preparation and collaborative law.
Patsy has been active in bar activities, since her law school graduation, serving as the Chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association's Family Law Section, Chair of the Executive Committee of the State Bar of California, and President of the Women Lawyers' Association of Los Angeles. She is one of the founding board members of the Los Angeles Collaborative Family Law Association (go to www.lacfla.org to learn more about collaborative law). During her term as President of WLALA, along with Black Women Lawyers, she helped to establish the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law, which is a legal clinic assisting low income families with domestic problems. Her interest in the issues of family law ethics led to the creation of the Family Law Ethics Institute.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Loyola Law School, Patsy became certified by the State Bar of California as a Family Law Specialist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
Patsy was recognized as one of 24 leading family law mediators in the State of California by the Los Angeles legal newspaper, The Daily Journal. She has volunteered her time as an arbitrator of disputes between clients and their attorneys, a mediator of disputes between non-violent juvenile offenders and their victims. The latter is a project of the progressive Jewish Alliance, an organization she helped to start, serving as its founding President. She is a frequent lecturer on family law issues.
